Complete Instructions for Applying Liquid Stone Granite™ Spray Coating to Countertops
Overview
This document provides comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for applying a Liquid Stone Granite™ spray coating to countertops, creating a seamless, durable, and aesthetically pleasing granite-like finish. The process involves surface preparation, applying a primer, a color coat, the Liquid Stone Granite™ coating, and/or Epoxy top coat, Poly-Urethane top coat, followed by inspection and curing. Each step includes descriptions and images to illustrate the process visually, aiding in understanding the application process. The coating is suitable for countertops made of laminate, wood, concrete, tile and other surfaces for both interior and exterior(non-epoxy) applications.

- Wear PPE (gloves, safety glasses, respirator mask) to protect against skin contact, eye irritation, and aerosol inhalation.
- Keep coating materials away from children, pets, open flames, or heat sources.
- Follow the manufacturer safety data sheet (SDS) for specific handling and disposal instructions.
- Test all products on an inconspicuous area before full application to ensure surface compatibility.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Surface Preparation
1. Clean and Sand the Countertop:
- Remove all dirt, grease, grime, and debris using a mild dish soap and water solution.
- Spray or wipe the solution onto the countertop with a lint-free microfiber cloth, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry completely with paper towels.
- For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive cleaner safe for the surface.
- Lightly sand the surface with 60-220 grit sandpaper to remove gloss and create a slightly rough texture for better adhesion.
- For glazed surfaces (e.g., laminate, ceramic tiles), ensure a product-specific primer is used for compatibility(included).
- Wipe away sanding dust with a damp microfiber cloth and dry thoroughly.
.
2. Mask Surrounding Areas:
- Apply painters tape and plastic sheeting to protect adjacent areas (e.g., backsplash, sink, cabinets).
- Cover the floor with drop cloths to catch overspray.
3. **Test the Surface (for Stone Countertops)**:
- For natural stone countertops (e.g., granite, marble), perform a water test to check porosity. Pour a 3-inch diameter pool of water on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. A dark mark or ring indicates porosity, requiring sealing after coating.
Step 2: Apply Primer Coat
1. **Prepare the Primer**:
- Stir or mix the primer thoroughly.
2. **Apply the Primer**:
- Apply the primer with a paint roller making sure to cover all surface area.
- Allow the primer to dry until touch-dry. Test dryness by lightly touching an inconspicuous area.
.
Step 3: Apply Color Base Coat
1. **Color Base Coat**:
- Mix the base coat thoroughly to ensure consistency.
2. **Apply the Color Base Coat**:
- Load the base coat into a paint pan and roll on the color base coat in 2 coats waiting between coats until touch-dry.
- Avoid excess buildup in corners or near edges, especially around sinks or overflows, to prevent drips.
3. **Sand Between Coats**:
- For a smoother finish, lightly sand with 400-600 grit sandpaper between coats and wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
.
Step 4: Apply Liquid Stone Granite™ Coating
1. **Prepare the Liquid Stone Granite™ Coating**:
- Stir the Liquid Stone Granite™ coating slowly for at least 2 minutes to evenly distribute the granite flakes.
2. **Apply the Liquid Stone Granite™**:
- Load the coating into the spray gun.
- Spray 12-15 inches from the countertop in multiple cross-directional passes to achieve an even, granite-like texture.
- Apply 2-3 layers, depending on desired opacity and texture.
3. **Inspect the Finish**: Make sure the coating has consistent coverage.
.
Step 5: Sand Coating
- To make the Liquid Stone Granite™ spray coating smooth, lightly sand the coating with 220 grit sand paper making sure to not sand through the coating on the edges. Recommend - sand the edges with a sponge sanding block, so that you will not sand through the coating.
.
Step 6: Apply Epoxy Top Coat
1. **Prepare the Epoxy Top Coat**:
- Mix the topcoat thoroughly according to the product instructions. (See Liquid Stone Elite instructions)
2. **Apply the Epoxy Top Coat**:
- Pour out the epoxy onto the countertop with .75oz per sq ft, spread evenly with a squeegee and let the epoxy self level making sure to re-roll with the included foam roller sleeve, making sure to not overwork the epoxy. Check for puddling epoxy at the backsplash areas.
- Allow the epoxy top coat to level. (Optional) Use propane torch to remove micro-bubbles from the surface and help level the epoxy.
- Allow 24 hours for curing at 77-81°F, keeping the surface dry and free from staining substances (e.g., oils, wine).
Step 7: Apply Poly-Urethane Top Coat
- For added durability, apply 1-2 coats of clear Poly-Urethane over the top coat after it has fully cured (typically 24 hours).
- Roll onto the surface in long, sweeping motions, ensuring even coverage, making sure to not leave roller marks or puddling. (Optional Spraying with HPLV gun using the green 2mm tip included with the spray gun as a add-on in the listing).
- Allow each coat to dry (at least 2 hours) at 77-81°F for best results.
Step 8: Final Inspection and Curing
1. **Inspect the Finish**:
- Examine the countertop for even texture, color consistency.
- Check for imperfections like haze, uneven spots, or missed areas. If haze appears, apply an additional topcoat.
- Ensure the granite effect looks natural, with evenly distributed flakes and no bald spots.
2. **Cure the Coating**:
- Allow the entire coating system to cure for at least 24 hours at 77-81°F before light use (e.g., placing objects on the surface).
- Avoid exposing the countertop to water, oils, or chemicals for 48-72 hours(7 days recommended) to ensure full curing and maximum durability.
Maintenance Tips
- **Clean Regularly**: Use a mild dish soap and water solution with a soft cloth for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent scratching the coating.
- **Wipe Spills Immediately**: Clean spills promptly with a damp cloth to prevent staining, especially from acidic substances like wine or lemon juice.
- **Reapply as Urethane as Needed**: Every 6-12 months, perform a water test to check the seal. If water absorbs within 20 minutes or wear is visible, reapply the topcoat following the same application steps.
Notes
- **Coverage**: A quart can of Liquid Stone Granite™ coating typically covers a standard kitchen countertop (check listing specifications for exact coverage rates).
- **Storage**: Store unused coating in a cool, dry place (>65°F) to maintain shelf life.
- **Customization**: Experiment with masking tape for unique designs (e.g., geometric patterns or borders) before applying the Liquid Stone Granite™ layer.
